Meet Your Therapist
Hi! I'm Shamalla, a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist. I have been supporting individuals and families since 2018.
In-Between Therapy was founded after I recognized a gap in support for individuals navigating religious and spiritual harm, deconstruction, and recovery from high-control environments.
Through both my professional work and personal experiences, I came to understand how isolating it can feel to question long-held beliefs, navigate changes in faith, deal with shunning or make sense of experiences within religious and spiritual communities.
In-Between Therapy is a space for those navigating life's in-between moments. Whether you're exploring doubts about your faith, processing religious or spiritual harm, healing from the impacts of a high-control religious environment, or rebuilding your sense of self after deconstruction, you deserve a compassionate, non-judgmental space to explore your experiences at your own pace.
In-Between Therapy is a specialized practice focused on supporting adults (18+) who are navigating religious and spiritual harm, faith transitions, deconstruction, and recovery from high-control environments. To learn more about these terms visit the definitions page.
What is Religious Trauma?
Religious trauma refers to the emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical harm that can result from harmful religious beliefs, practices, or environments. It can affect a person's sense of identity, safety, relationships, and ability to trust themselves or others, and may continue even after leaving a faith community.
What Is Religious & Spiritual Harm?
Religious and spiritual harm can occur when beliefs, teachings, communities, leaders, or spiritual practices cause emotional, psychological, relational, or spiritual distress. These experiences may involve fear-based teachings, shame, exclusion, coercion, abuse, or the loss of community following a change in beliefs (disfellowshipment, shunning and excommunication).
The impact of these experiences can affect a person's sense of identity, mental and physical health, self-worth, relationships, decision-making, and connection to themselves or others.
